Mesečev Zaliv Beach is a small cove nestled beneath cliffs up to 80 meters high, hidden within the Strunjan Landscape Park between Izola and Piran. You can’t drive here, as only a narrow path leads to the beach. It’s never crowded here, even at the height of the season, even though photos of this spot are among the most recognizable online. If you’re looking for a beach with lounge chairs and a bar, you’re better off checking out Strunjan Beach—people come here for the views and the peace and quiet.
What the Beach Is Like
- Surface type: Pebbles and rocks at the base of the cliffs; it can be slippery in some spots. There’s no sand, just like almost anywhere else on the Slovenian coast.
- Entry into the water: The water gets deep quickly, and the bottom is rocky. Water shoes are recommended.
- Shade: There is almost no natural shade on the beach itself—the cliffs provide shade only to part of the shore, and even then only at certain times of day.
- Water: Crystal-clear, turquoise—this is exactly what the beach is best known for in photographs.
Infrastructure and Amenities
There is absolutely no infrastructure here, as this is a wild beach. There are no restrooms, showers, water kiosks, or lounge chairs. Bring everything with you: water, food, a beach mat, and sunscreen.
- Special feature: The beach is popular among nudists; there are no official rules regarding this.
Is it suitable for…
- Children: Not really. The rocky path and the sudden drop-off into deep water aren’t suitable for small children, and the path is completely impassable for strollers.
- A peaceful getaway: Yes, this is the main attraction of this spot. Even at the height of the season, most people are there mainly between noon and 4 p.m.; early in the morning or later in the afternoon, the bay is almost empty.
- Snorkeling and photography: Yes, the clear water and cliffs are what draw people here.
How to Get There and Where to Park Nearby
There is no paved road leading to the beach, and access by car is not possible—only on foot. It’s good to know this in advance so you don’t waste time looking for a nonexistent access route.
- From the Strunjan side: You can park in the public parking lot by Strunjan Beach (paid), then continue on foot through the forest along the Mediterranean Walking Trail (about 30 minutes).
- What to bring: Closed-toe shoes for walking on the trail (not beach flip-flops), water, and water shoes.
